Thespian Troupe 4937

The International Thespian Society was established in 1929 by a group of college and high school teachers in Fairmont, West Virginia. They named their organization for Thespis, the Greek who—according to legend—was the first actor. Their guiding principle was a dedication to excellence in theater arts in secondary schools. In the years since, the Society has grown into an international organization with more than a million members, but its goals haven't changed: the Thespian Society still strives to make schools a place for good theater and to honor those students who do theater well.

The International Thespian Society is the only organization to honor secondary school students for outstanding work in theater. The resolution with which the Society tackles this role is evident in its focus on the students; their achievements, involvement and access to quality theater arts instruction are the basic concerns of ITS. We take these ideals very seriously and also include philanthropic work such as Broadway Cares.

“Act well your part; there all the honor lies.” ~Alexander Pope
